If a tournament issues a specific (side-lock) rule, please follow the Tournament Director's instructions. If a tournament is NOT side locked, it means that debaters have to flip a coin BEFORE they start the round. Winner gets to choose sides OR speaking order.

Speaker Points
A simple description of speaker points is included in the Cheat Sheet for Judges above. Generally speaking, on a scale of 0-30, 26 is offensively bad, while 30 means the debater is possibly a champion. Note that speaker points descriptions can be different for each tournament. LD judges are usually told to assign speaker points with the increments of 0.1. For PF, often judges are instructed to assign half points when necessary. However, at times, such as at Yale in 2019, PF judges were specifically instructed to assign speaker points based on 0.1 increments.
